We stayed at Kickapoo Cavern State park about 50 miles from the Mexican border in early February 2022. This park is 25 miles from the nearest tiny town. It used to be a sheep and goat ranch and the rancher donated it to Texas to make a state park. There are still ranch structures in the park and you get a good idea of what ranch life was like. The parks claim to fame is the cave where the bats roost. It wasn't bat season when we were there. You can also take a wild cave tour on Saturday afternoons. There are a lot of trails great for hiking and mountain biking if you can do rocks. I intended a short hike because it was cold, but kept wanting to see what was around the next corner. The stars at night were fabulous. I enjoyed this park and would like to go back and see it in the spring and fall.
